The story

About this site

In 2014 I wrote a blog post about New Zealand slang for confused travellers. People never stopped commenting on it — correcting my definitions, arguing about whether it's "eh" or "aye", and submitting words from their home towns that exist nowhere else on the internet.

A decade later, I built the thing those comments were asking for: a proper dictionary of what New Zealanders actually say, where anyone can submit a word and the community votes on the best definitions.

This site is also an experiment I'm running in public: it was built in two weekends, costs about $3 a month to run, and every dollar it earns gets invested and tracked publicly. You can follow the whole journey — income reports, traffic numbers, what worked and what didn't — at moneybren.com.
